What does new-condition coverage mean?

New-condition coverage is a new type of coverage for pet owners looking for protection for their pets for the ‘just in case’ moments.

PHI Direct offers new-condition coverage, which provides coverage to your pet for the new unexpected illnesses and accidents that they might experience in their lifetime. Unlike other pet insurance providers, this approach to coverage offers protection for accidents and new illnesses your pet may experience for up to one year.

  • Your pet will be covered for up to 12 months, or your policy renewal date (the anniversary date of your pet’s policy), for any new conditions they experience that year.
  • If a claim is made for an eligible condition that occurred during a policy year, this condition will have coverage up to the policy limit or until the policy anniversary date (the renewal date). Once the policy limit or policy anniversary date has been reached, this specific illness, injury, or condition will no longer be eligible for coverage in the following policy year. An exclusion regarding that illness or injury will then be applied to your policy, as it is now considered a pre-existing condition.
  • Once your pet has a pre-existing condition in a policy year, you’re still covered for everything else not related to that condition in future policy years, including accidents and new illnesses for that year. If a condition becomes more longstanding, we believe pet owners will be in a better position to budget for the ongoing care, as the initial diagnosis and treatment of the illness or injury is typically when there are higher costs.
  • This approach to coverage helps keep pet guardians’ premiums lower over the course of a pet’s lifetime while still protecting their pets for new unexpected incidents each year.
