Do I have to get a wellness exam for my pet by a vet clinic in Canada prior to enrolling?

Getting a wellness exam for your pet is required prior to enrolling with PHI Direct.

Yes, your pet must have had a complete wellness exam performed by a licensed veterinarian in Canada or the U.S. prior to enrollment. Unfortunately, we cannot accept wellness exams done in other countries.

If you're a current PHI Direct member and your pet has not had a wellness exam done, you must get one. If your pet doesn’t get a wellness exam, your claims may be denied or we may cancel your policy as we need those records, in addition to any other medical records for your pet, in order to process any claims that you may submit.

If we cancel your policy because your pet has not been seen by a licensed veterinarian prior to enrollment, you can re-enroll when your pet has a wellness exam done and we receive the medical records from the visit. However, any conditions noted by the veterinarian at that visit will be considered a pre-existing condition and will be ineligible for coverage.

Other helpful enrollment requirements

  • Your pet must be at least 7 weeks of age and under 14 years of age at the time of enrollment
  • Your pet must have all vaccinations and other preventive treatments as recommended by your veterinarian
  • You must follow advised treatments for your pet by your veterinarian to prevent illnesses and accidents
